4G at a remote site: turning a weak signal into a stable connection
A remote object and a cellular connection are an eternal pair of contradictions: there is coverage on the map, and in the telemetry cabinet the modem shows one stick and falls off. The difference between “no communication” and “works for years” is almost always not in the modem, but in the antenna path.
Scheme: antenna outside, modem inside, path short
The working scheme is the same on the KNS, the shore post and the construction trailer: a directional panel outside (on the mast, wall or window opening), a short feeder down, a modem in the cabinet. For the upper band 2500–2700 MHz, a panel is suitable MIG WIMAX Panel 2.6-14 - 14 dB, 0.37 kg, tape clamping, accurate orientation on two planes.
Guidance: Half the battle - in the turn
A directional antenna forgives everything except inaccurate guidance. The order is simple: find the azimuth of the base station (by the operator’s coverage map or the signal level scanner in the modem), set the panel, turn the maximum RSSI / RSRP, then check the polarization – turning 90 degrees from the correct one eats the gain almost completely.
Cable: where the winnings are lost
The classic error is a 14 dB panel plus ten meters of thin cable: attenuation eats a third of gain. Rules: feeder 50 ohms with low attenuation, minimum length, modem rises closer to the antenna, connectors are sealed. The antenna on the mast is part of the radio node: it needs lightning protection and grounding of the mast.
When 4G cannot be saved
If there is no coverage at all or the network is congested by season, the antenna will not help: it needs at least some signal from the outside. Then they count their radio channel: 150-174 MHz network on Integra-TR or repeater for dead zones. Comparison of money. "Radiomodem or cellular".
Frequently asked questions
Will the 14 dB panel lift the channel if there is no signal at all?
The antenna amplifies the existing signal from the outside. If there is no coverage at all, you need your own radio channel, for example, a network on Integra-TR radio modems.
How do I find where to turn the panel?
According to the operator’s coverage map, azimuth of the base station, then fine-tuning the signal level (RSSI/RSRP) in the modem interface.
Why is it recommended to raise the modem closer to the antenna?
Each meter of cable eats up some of the gain. A short thick feeder retains the winnings of the panel; a long thin feeder loses.
Do you need a lightning shield?
Yes: the antenna on the mast is part of the radio node, the path is grounded and protected by the discharger.
